Clean Oceans Project Identification and Preparation (COPIP) programme and the European Investment Bank (EIB) are pleased to organise a high-level World Circular Economy Forum (WCEF) side event to be held at Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence, Nairobi Arboretum on 8 November 2023 from 09:30–12:30 EAT.
WCEF is a global initiative of Finland and Sitra, the Finnish Innovation Fund – it presents circular economy solutions with global business leaders, policymakers and experts. WCEF organises annual forums to showcase circular economy best practices – WCEF 2023 was held from 30th May to 2nd June in Helsinki, Finland. As a continuation of this event, partners are holding a series of WCEF side events throughout 2023 on specific topics related to the circular economy to attract an international audience.
An important event for the waste management sector in Sub-Saharan Africa
A COPIP programme, carried out by a consultant consortium consisting of Tetra Tech International Development and Egis Eau, has been working since 2020 to identify, assess and prepare for the implementation of bankable solid waste, wastewater and stormwater management projects in Sub-Saharan Africa in the public and private sectors.
The consultants identified over 50 project ideas, prepared 20 project fiches, and undertook pre-feasibility studies for eight projects. In addition, COPIP is implementing pilot projects as proof of concept of selected project component(s) or approach(es) and to build awareness and commitment among local stakeholders.
COPIP identified bankable project ideas emphasising the introduction of circular solutions to the waste management sector. The projects, if implemented, would significantly improve the municipal solid waste management sector in Africa, generate job opportunities for young people, and enhance the environment and public health aspects of the population.
COPIP gained significant insights into the solid waste management sector in Sub-Saharan Africa, activities for the transfer of knowledge and expertise in project development, project management, financing, operation, and maintenance techniques to public and private sector project sponsors and other government counterparts – all of which will be shared with the audience during this unmissable event.
Interactive panel discussion with question-and-answer Q&A session
This will be an interactive event in which EIB, COPIP and several partners from both the private and public sectors will deliberate on several issues ranging from issues affecting the solid waste sector to available financing tools. The panel discussion comprising experts from municipalities, government agencies, financial institutions and donor agencies from across the globe will deliberate on supporting the transition from a linear to a circular economy model in waste management. Coupled with a question-and-answer session, this will be one of Kenya’s most interesting WCEF events.
